Living Well
The Gratitude Game. Neil Pasricha is an expert on happiness, and “Rose, Rose, Thorn, Bud” is one of his hacks. Whether you’ve heard of it before or not - now might be the perfect time to brush off this simple game and give it a whirl.
I first heard Neil’s idea on a podcast interview with him a few years ago. My family and I have been “playing” it at dinner for over 4 weeks now. It’s quite wonderful. My 8 and 10-year-old prompt us to play if I don’t. You choose one person to go first. Each “Rose” is a highlight of their day or something they are grateful for. They explain one “Rose”. Then a second one. They then explain their “Thorn”: Something that didn’t go so well. That disappointed them. Or that they regret. They finish with their “Bud”: A little something they are looking forward to. Maybe tomorrow or further on down the road.

The premise of the game is that people who take a moment to focus on and document things they are grateful for are far happier and physically healthier than those who don’t. The beauty of Neil’s take is it’s practical and well rounded: It doesn’t require a journal. It encourages daily acknowledgement of what we are grateful for. Mathematically it provides two times more gratitude than regret. And the regret piece is vital: it is humbling, a wonderful growth opportunity, and hearing what the people you love regretted in their day can be powerfully insightful. It encourages empathy. And sometimes the regret takes the form of an apology. “I regret that I was so impatient with you this morning.” The bud – for me – is the best part. What could be better than ending the game, the meal, or the day with a little hope.

Trainer Moves of the Day
Another easy sub-10-minute workout! Grab two paint cans (equally filled), a band or some tubing, and set yourself up by your staircase. I take a little extra time cueing the first round (can’t help myself). But once you’ve got the moves, you could fly through 3 or 4 sets of this in 10 minutes.

Bite of the Day
You may recall on Monday that I was using leftover rhubarb to make my smoothie. The original inspiration for pulling the red/green vegetables from my garden? Cake. Really easy and really, really good. I didn’t have sour cream so substituted Greek yogurt. There was also ¼ pint of raspberries sitting in the fridge. So, I threw those in too.
