"Soup of the Day"...just got serious!
More than four-hundred years ago, a single sovereign came to rule two kingdoms. Each possessed its own coat of arms: one depicting two lions, the other two unicorns. Unification of the lands resulted in the creation of one single coats of arms, with one beast on either side.
It is not clear if the two creatures seek to rule together or are fighting for the crown. Most think they are fighting.

A group of lions is a Pride. And the Lion is proud. A brave, fierce, natural carnivore. A blood thirsty, social predator who will kill and even die in the fight to ensure survival of the pride.
The Unicorn, once found in the far-reaching corners of the known world, possessed the head of a stag, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar. Diverse, courageous, wild, and also proud.

If they are in fact fighting, it is not clear to me who would win. They stand on equal footing. They tower to equal heights.
What if, instead they are figuring out how to rule together? If the Lion no longer needs to fight, the Unicorn – often elusive – will, can appear; accompanied by wisdom, the ability to heal, and purge poison. The rested Lion becomes stronger, more careful. They both remain proud, but their pride no longer burns with conflict and fear. They are proud of themselves, yes, but also of each other. And this creates love. It also creates space. When you are proud of someone you stand back. You admire their strengths and watch them grow.
And so, the Lion and the Unicorn create room for each other. Room for the other to be right. Room to each live and thrive as they see fit. To naturally discover the ways their differences blend and fill. To raise each other up whenever needed. To ebb and flow and to love the freedom and growth that ruling with the other brings.

Inspiration of the Day
“But there comes a time when this pride must be abandoned and transmuted into the pride of the unicorn. When this happens, he has no more need to fight, for he has begun to find his nourishment through that love which is beyond love-hate opposites, beyond right and wrong. The unicorn harms nothing, her horn is lifted in a remote and lovely pride as we glimpse her now and then on her swift course. This pride can only appear in one who has already fought bitter and bloody battles within herself; to move beyond this battle of opposites requires an imaginative vision.” Peter Taylor, excerpt from a lecture given at Queen’s University 1995
